Darby, I agree with Rob that this was the episode I most enjoyed so far.

I see Mal as being a fundamentally angry man. He has his sense of right and wrong; justice and injustice. The slavery issue was shown here as a particularly sore subject for Mal. The bar scene at the top of the episode was quite revealing, where the slave runner doesn't bother to buy rations for his slaves. They can starve for all he cares. This just adds to the anger that Mal already has over the loss of the war. I see Mal's behavior as a reasonable consequence of this, and I like the way it is portrayed here.

I was struck by the debutant ball scenes, where it is revealed that slavery is fully institutionalized on this planet. As such, we must believe that this slavery exists with the full knowledge (and approval) of the Alliance; though we don't yet know if the slavery exists throughout the Alliance.

At the debutant ball, we have young ladies of all races and colors making their debut into society, and discussing their slaves. So, I wonder, who are these slaves we are hearing about? Are the slaves a particular race of people, or from a particular place (ie. planet or moon), or from a particular socio-economic stratum? These are questions I will be interested to learn more about in upcoming episodes.

River just keeps on becoming more fascinating to me. We've heard that she is some kind of genius, but there must be more to it than that. Past episodes seemed to have her predict events, but we can't be sure. This week she seems to read and imitate the behavior of the creep. Even more interesting, she sounded lucid!

As an engineer, Kaylee already has my heart. It was touching to see her desire to taste a little of the high society, only to find that she will not be allowed that taste. In Out of Gas, I actually found Kaylee a little out of character, since she seemed to exhibit defeatist behavior, but I really enjoyed her this week.
