"So, did anyone else get this sense of Persephone's upper crust as this one generation deep?"

Yes, I posted a similar thought in response to CW's message below. You've added some impressive detail that I missed. I thought initially that I was stretching on that speculation, but your post suggests to me that maybe this was more intentional than I gave it credit for.

"I actually kind of expected her to explain how saber/rapier fencing is a lot like knife fighting. I'd be very surprised if Mal, given both a military and bar fight background, doesn't know how to fight with a knife."

Hmmmm, I think I'd have to disagree on this one. I've known a few guys who were good knife fighters, one who was nothing short of phenomenal--Filipino trained, special forces type, slightly scary. Generally the best ones had the least sword-like technique; they like to hold the knife point down and get in close and slash. That technique works with a 4 or 5 inch blade, but I think a 2 1/2 foot blade (or whatever) is a different story. My point is that even a trained soldier might not know anything particularly useful about this type of sword work. Also, would we expect Inara to know much about knife fighting?

Just my $.02
