Your post reminds me. The kipnapping of the doctor is from Dr. Zhivago. There too, a doctor who basically has given up practice, is drafted into service with people who need him. In both cases it was emphasized that the doctor's home was wherever he happened to be, and in the case of the kidnappings that home also was wherever he was needed. (Of course, Simon is most neeeded with River. She is his home now.) In Dr. Zhivago it's possible for the kidnappers to get away with him. Zhivago escapes only when the band of partisans, he is with, grows too weary to watch him after many battles. With the technology of Serenity there can be no get-away, only a temporary side-trip to give Simon a chance to learn a little more about what his sister has become.
