I don't know... I too thought I saw some Mal/Simon slashy goodness since "the Train Job." I was a little off put by Mal/Inara and Simon/Kaylee, though. Of course, there's a perfect solution. Mal/Simon and Inara/Kaylee. It's actually very odd to see how there is a tangible "caring" relationship between Inara/Mal, Mal/Simon, and Simon/Kalee yet they are all very distinct relationships in and of themselves.

Regarding Jayne's "pretty mouth" comment, I had just assumed it was derogatory in the sense that "pretty" implied Simon's unfitness for the crew. Primarily in the sense that "pretty" suggests a socially-accepted upper-crust fragility whereas a crew of "hired work" such as Serenity is socially marginalized, down-to-earth, and must be able to take whatever punches may come.
