I think it's reasonable fan spec to think that Jayne might be functionally illeterate. He might have been able to write himself a phonetic cheat sheet, but I wonder what "grade-level" his reading skills acheived if he didn't get "schooling." It explains his non-reading of the diary, which initially made me wonder if he could read, or at least whether he can read script or Mandarin. Also provides a convenient fan-wank for why Mal left him with Simon and River. Someone on another board speculated that Jayne might not have the education necessary to read the medecine labels and wouldn't have been much help in finding the right stuff to steal.
