***The characters in Babylon 5 were not as well drawn and you never saw the sort of well written stand alone episodes that you got in the Next Generation. But the universe as a whole was much more coherent and the morality was much more complicated and interesting.***

That sums up what I feel in a nutshell. There were exceptional episodes in all the Trek incarnations (well, except maybe for Voyager which I tried but was never able to get into) that still stand out in memory long after seeing them. (and in the case of 'City on the Edge of Forever' decades after viewing)

The Trek problem seems to be a backing away from moral ambiguity, rather than a refusal to address it. In DS9 particularly they try to add/show the darker sides but just when it looks like we might get some darkness the writers would skitter back into safer ground. The one time they managed to do so without retreating or nicing it up was 'In the Pale Moonlight'.

Sisko - "So: I lied... I cheated... I bribed men to cover the crimes of other men. I am an accessory to murder. But the most damning thing of all: I think I can live with it, and if I had to do it all over again, I would."

(Plus it had Garak, who always makes me drool)

With B5 I always had somewhat of an idea of the basic plots but never found an episode that just rocked my socks off. (or maybe B5 just needed Klingons-grin)
