It has never been stated on the show that there are no male companions. So far we've only met two, both of whom happen to be female (one, a companion gone bad). But I don't think that that means they don't exist. What we've heard of the Guild has been quite vague, much like what we know of the Watchers Council. We definitely need more info.

But the main reason Inara is female, I believe, has less to do with stereotyping or even FOX's dislike of a male prostitute, and more the fact that Joss said that he was deliberately parallelling the old Westerns and, in particular, the movie, "Stagecoach," which had a prostitute w/ a heart of gold, similar to Inara, and the John Wayne cowboy figure similar to Mal (as well as a priest, and a doctor, among others). Old Westerns would not have had a male prostitute.
