Subject: Alliance and Independents... who's good (if at all) and who's bad?

Alliance vs Independents
Well, well, well, hopefully I won't hop into a hornet's nest by asking this question :-)
So far, we've seen little of the Alliance, even less than we have seen of the Independents.
Maybe it's just a feeling I have but for some reason I'm not yet quite sure, if the Alliance
was/is the all-around "bad guy" in the universe that Joss came up with.
And even though I believe it to be very reasonable that neglected planets might fall into some
stage of rogue society, I'm still not utterly convinced that the Independents were the nice kids on the block.

For some reason this wouldn't be Joss'esque if the world could be so easily be devided in black and white.

In many discussions I have seen references of FIREFLY's world to the Civil War. Well, now,
this reference really makes me wonder all the more if the Independents were only fighting for their freedom.
Who knows if we won't see in the future of the storyline that they had other motives
as well that drove them to fight...
And even if they didn't, still - who says that the motives driving the Alliance were all bad?
Inara seems like a good-hearted person. If the motives of the Alliance were all bad,
do you believe she still would have supported unification?

I suspect there's no easy answer to any of my questions. Hell, I wonder if there are any at all! :)
I'd love to hear your opinions on this!

- Soraya
