Subject: River as a Goddess Figure (Objects in Space spoilers)

The red planet in the very first scene, with Serenity floating by -- and the red rubber ball in the very last scene, amidst all the jumping jacks that looked like scattered stars. River, gazing down upon it all, scooping up the stars and the planets like a giant goddess.

River as the Three Fates. She is the Maid, chaste and young and innocent. Simon says she's just a kid. He can't even conceive of River 'grappling' with one of the crew. But River is developing, blossoming. She is on the cusp of discovery, as we can see from her reaction to Zoe and Wash. River is the Mother. She cares for her crew, protects them and carries them within her; she is Serenity personified. Laughing with Mal, she sighs, admits that Simon takes so much looking after. And River is the Crone, Atropos with her deadly shears. She is implacable with Early, firm and unyielding, engineering his death.

She is the Reader who peers into the hearts of those around her. Her abilities mark her as 'not quite right'. Zoe thinks she is an assassin. Jayne thinks she is a witch.

What is River? Even her name is suggestive -- rivers are constantly changing, elusive and ephemeral because the water always flows and you can never step into the same river twice (yeah, I can quote Disney if I want). But that same river can endure for centuries, millennia. When the floods come, the river overflows its banks and nourishes the land, making it fertile.

...hmm, okay, that was my attempt at a stream-of-consciousness review. Not sure I pulled it off, but at least I got to say my piece. Really, really hope UPN picks up "Firefly" because I am enthralled with River and I want to watch Joss peel back the layers of her so I can learn her. uh, yeah, again with the free-form writing. ugh, I should leave this kind of thing to fresne.
