Subject: Comments about Objects in Space (with spoilers for same)

This morning I re-watched Objects in Space and I was marveling at River's solution to the problem of the bounty hunter. It wasn't until I saw it again that I realized that River was allowing Mal to make his choice without any pressure from the other members of the crew.

Because she overheard their conversation, River knew that Mal and the crew were afraid of her, and that Mal was reserving judgement until he had time to consider the problem. I believe also that River recognized that she was schizophrenic, and that she may be a danger to ship and crew.

River purposely orchestrated the situation such that Mal could choose to rescue her, or not. Since River communicated her plan to Mal on a private channel, the crew would have thought that River voluntarily surrendered herself to Early, regardless of Mal's decision.

The result is that River prostrated herself to Mal, and trusted him to make the right choice. Such a wonderful episode!
