On Mal's dislikability, I would point out that the joke he played on Simon, while cruel, was played on a guy who was instrumental in monumentally screwing up the crew's lives; with Kaylee hurt, feds on their trail, and an undercover cop they had no idea what to do with. I'd cut him some slack there.
