Mal's continuing moral ambiguity: while he may be a nice guy, he is very casual about killing people. After his shooting of Dobson last ep, we now have him kicking Nietchka's thug into the Serenity's engine. OK, the sanctity of human life in Firefly is considerably less than in the Buffyverse.

I loved it so much, because the scene was leading into the cliche bad guy saying "Ha ha, we'll get you next time!" and then BOOM Mal thinks the better of sending him back as a messenger and kicks him into the engine. Watching "The Train Job" as the first episode, as we did here in the US, we had a confusing and frustrating introduction to the show. While it was a pretty good (though not a great) episode in retrospect, as a first episode, it sucked. We were dropped into this world we didn't understand, with no backstory besides that quick "mythology recap" a la "In every generation...", met multitudes of characters we weren't given enough time to really grok, and were given a rather uninspired adventure. But this scene was one of the few that showed me what kind of potential "Firefly" could have. It's the reason I kept watching (besides the men with the blue hands) after the first episode. Luckilly, already by the second episode they aired (who knows which one it really was lol), I believe it was "Bushwhacked," I became much more interested in the story and characters. But that's another story...
