In a number of ways Jaynesville was the best of all the episodes I saw. (But, remember I did miss one of the original run, and there are three eps we never saw here.)

The main story was very strong, and Baldwin put in one of the best performances of the season.

Out of Gas - I had the same feeling about the engine looking like an electric motor/ generator. This of course was the episode from which I accidentally blurted out about Kaylee coming to the ship a few weeks ago. Guess it wasn't spoiled too badly for you. ;o)

Ariel - was the point at which it seemed that a season arc was really developing. But, by that time the shaodw of cancellation was already looming. Everyone here was cursing FOX for not showing the eps in order. But, as you mention some of the eps in the critical time frame were 'intensely mediocre.'
