The hat thing sounds so very Jayne. From what you say about it, I'm a little reminded of the "special stick".

The bionic organs thing makes me wonder if, had "Firefly" continued, it would have edged more towards traditional sci-fi concepts. After all, you've already got the blue-hand men and what they did to River. It's possible that, in order to come up with new storylines, more science-fiction and less old west would have to be incorporated into the show. It wouldn't be the first time ME changed the basic concept of a show to improve the story (remember when "Angel" used to be an "anthology show"?)
