Setting aside the irritating image of Firelight momentarily, Tori kept her genuine smile in place. Manners under duress... must be subliminal training given to lead mares before they could take their positions. Even under the most strenuous conditions, Tori would unerringly fall back on her manners. The charcoal-painted mare seemed to be made of the same stuff.

"And you as well... " a short pause, and the golden dame's memory finally kicked in. "Moonlight. Call me Tori, please." The first word was punctuated with triumph. Her looks may be fading, but her mind was still sharp. And speaking of sharp things, her tongue was itching to be set loose.

"Ah Firelight, try as you or your kind might, your inept attempts to break anything on me, spiritually or physically, will be a swift lesson in dismal failure."

Did Tori hate Firelight? Well, no. She pitied the creature more than anything. It must be a life sadly lacking in the truly important things for Firelight to derive so much pleasure out of meting out pain and suffering to others. Had Tori the time, or patience, she might have tried to ferret out why Firelight was the way she was. Had she cared, she could have probed the fire-licked jezebel's psyche for the broken link, the reason she had turned from Light to Evil. Oh yes, Tori knew of Firelight's parentage, knew that Firelight's mother was a Light mare, knew that part of her captivity was to keep Firelight's own mother safe from the corrupt machinations of the new Evil queen. Twisted, tangled webs indeed.

Could Tori's insults hit low? By golly, yes they could. The price to be paid for setting her harsh tongue free, however, was a guilty conscience afterward. Despite the frustration, the irritation, the downright boredom that she suffered at the hands, erm, hooves, of the Evils, Tori was too intrinsically Light to derive any pleasure from hurting another, physically or mentally. Maybe one little snarky comment wouldn't cause her too much insomnia...

"Breaks your heart, does it? Such a shame that it isn't your neck, my dear."

A wrinkle of her nose projected her contempt, her mocking tone leaving no room for misinterpretation. If it was a battle of wits Firelight wanted, by Jove she would get it. And heaven help the chestnut if she dared to bring up Shazaam, a barb that the palomino was sure Firelight had in her arsenal. For then, all bets would be off, she would deal with the not-so-guilty aftermath if it came. Firelight's personal situation might not have been as public as Tori's, but the cunning dame knew as much of Firelight as she did of Adrian. If Firelight dared to cross that line, the gilded matriarch would hold nothing back.
