*Roosevelt had long been concerned about the conservation and exploration of America's natural rescources

*Had romantic regard for the wilderness
*Stopped land development on large parts of land in the west and made them natonal forests
*First president to be active in the movements for land conservation
*As a result, the most importantlegacy of Roosevelts conservation policy was to establish the governments role as a manager of the continuing development to the wildreness.
*1902,Reclamation Act (a.k.a. Newlands Act b/c named after its sponserFrancis Newlands)
-provided federal funds for the construction of dams, resevoirs, and canals in the west
-projects that would open new lands for cultivation and (years later)provide cheap electrcal power
-began years of federal aid for irrigation and power development in the western states
*No impact until 2o years after passage
