A. Wilson’s plan
i. wanted US to not get involved in war, but to use it as a vehicle for constructing a new world order
a. 1917, Wilson proposes before congress, a plan to help maintain peace through a permanent league of nations
B. Zimmermann Telegram
i. to attempt victory in the war, Germany attacked US and French fleets of subs to cut off Britain from vital supplies
a. this made it inevitable that the US would enter the war
ii. feb. 1917, Arthur Zimmermann, German foreign minister, sends a telegram to Mexico encouraging them to go to war w/ America
a. the telegram was intercepted by Britain and given to the US
iii. Wilson plead his case for the US entering the war to a special session of congress
a. on apr. 6, 1917, war was declared
