I. Early Obstacles
A. Wilson’s hopes
i. he hoped his 14 point plan would win everyone over, but it encountered more skepticism than planned
a. the European allied powers referred to his self-feeling of moral superiority when Wilson refused to be known as an “ally” but kept his distance as an “associate”
B. Allied Non-Compromisation
i. the allied powers wanted retribution in the form of the German Kaiser’s execution
C. Wilson’s troubles at home
i. he got American voters to support his peace plans by electing democrats to congress
ii. days later, the republicans won majority in both houses and damaged his ability to claim broad popular support for his peace plans
iii. the leaders of the republican party begin to dislike Wilson
a. some were angry that he tried to make the 1918 balloting a vote for his war aims, especially since many republicans supported his 14 points
b. they were angered further when he refused to appoint any important republicans to the negotiating team that would represent the US at the Paris Peace Conference
c. to Wilson, his opinion was the only one that mattered
