A. Democrats were more diverse than Republicans
1. split into 2 groups
a. prohibitionists, Klansmen, & fundamentalists
b. Catholics, urban workers, & immigrants
2. they was much tension between the two groups
B. Al Smith
1. 1928 – he finally secured his party’s nomination for president
2. he had trouble uniting Democrats due to anti-Catholic sentiment in the South
3. Herbert Hoover beat him in election
