Subject: ch.26 The New Deal in the West and the South

The New Deal in The West & the SOuth
-the west got more federal funds per captia
-most westeners were eagar for assistance from the new deal
-in Colorado refused the New Feal
-people in Colorado rioted
-then legislation reversed & provided funding
*Failure to Challenge Jim Crow
-in some states relief agencies paid diffrent groups diffrent rates
-Anglos got the most aid
-Blacks,Indians,& Mexicans got lesser aid
-New Deals impact on the west was mostly agriculture
-they built dams/power stations
-west needed new sources of water/power
*New Deal's Legacy in the West
-after the Great Depression the gov. had a great presence in the west than any other region
-the south did not get as much b/s the thought of the south to be "backward"
-people the south was "backward" b/c racism, segration & prejudice
-most of the southeners did not have electricity
-the new deal provided some of the south w/ electricty
-1938 economic report called the south"the nations #1 economic problem"
-soem southeners saaw the report as a reinfrocment of anti-southern prejudices
-others saw it as a way to win national support to modernize & develop the south
