A. The Navy had two important roles in the war
1. The Union Blockade of the Southern coast
2. Assisting Union armies in field operations
a. blockade ordered April 19, 1861
b. never fully effective, but generally kept oceangoing ships out of confederate ports
c. Confederates tried to break blockade with new weapons
i. Ironclad Warship
-made by iron plating the Merrimac
-renamed the Virginia
ii. the Union built the Monitor
iii. the Monitor defeated the Virginia
