A overthrowing republican control
1.Upper South - majority white – this made it easy
2. only needed to organize and vote for candidates
B. Lower Southern states
1.Whites weren't majority - used intimidation to regain control
2.KKK and other groups prevented blacks from voting
C. The KKK
1. Most effective group
2. made rituals, costumes, secret languages, etc.
3. midnight rides brought terror to black communities
D.KKK - a military group
1. white southerners considered it a military force to fight against north rule
2. Most effective was economic pressure to get rid of republican control
a. Employers refused to employ blacks
