I the death of Lincoln
A. Lincoln shot on April 14, 1865
1.He and wife attended play at Ford's theatre in Washington
2.John Wilkes Booth entered the presidential box where Lincoln was and shot him in the head
a. he was from a distinguished family of actors
b. obsessed with aiding south
3.Licoln taken to house across street
4. He died the next morning
B. Lincoln considered martyr
1. North went hysterical
2.Booth was part of conspiracy
a. associates killed sec of state the same night
b. another was supposed to murder VP but chickened out
3. Booth escaped but was later found and killed by union troops
4. 8 other people were convicted of conspiracy and 4 hanged
C.North believed that the death of Lincoln was part of a great conspiracy from the south
1. republicans said the death of Lincoln doomed his plans for peace
