The Idea of the Frontier
A. Labor shortage
1. Farmers, Ranchers, & Miners needed to hire a paid labor force
2. wages rose for those who had jobs
3. difficult working conditions
4. no job security
5. Chinese immigrants got jobs over whites because they worked for lower wages
B. Racially Stratified Working Class
1. working class was highly multiracial
2. Whites developed many racial assumptions
a. whites believed that Chinese, Mexicans, and Filipinos were genetically or culturally suited to manual labor
b. because they were small, they worked better in deep mines than whites did
c. because they were used to the heat, they worked better in the fields
