-mexican ranchers developed techniques: branding,roundups,roping,and the gear:lariats,saddles,leather chaps,spurs
-texas had largest heards in the country
*TEXAS AND CATTLE
-end of civil war had 5million cattle roam
-hard to get cattle to eastern markets
-difficult journey
-loss of cattle
-cattle wouldnt gain wieght
*CHISHOLN TRAIL
-eaisier route
-route ended in Abilene,Kansas
-mid-1870's agriculture took over open land
-had to find new routes
*COWBOYS
-early cowboys usually veterans of COnfederate Army
-then African Americans,white northeners,Mexicansor foriengers
-cattling was a risk and a speculation business
*COMPETITION WITH FARMERS
-"RANGE WARS" between cattlemen/sheepmen and farmers/ranchers
-wars loss of life and property damage
-1885-1886&1886-1887 there was 2 hard winters with very hot summers
-dried up the plains
-open-range never recovered
-fenced-in ranches came out on top
*WOMEN RANCHERS
-250,000 women owned ranches
-could make a prences in politics
-took control in the politics
