Subject: Ch16 - The Dawes Act

I. The Dawes Act
A. provided for the gradual elimination of tribal ownership of land
i. allotments to individual owners
a. head of family - 160 acres
b. single adult/orphan - 80 acres
c. each dependant child - 40 acres
ii. adults given u.s. citizenship but couldn't take full title to their property for 25 years
a. applied to most western tribes excluding pueblos
b. indian children were taken from families, put into white-run boarding schools, and taught to hate their culture
iii. after the corruption became too apparent, the government abandoned the act
