A. Transportation Problems
i. Urban Growth
a. streets too narrow for growing traffic
b. many streets were not paved
-by 1890, Chicago had only 600 of 2,000 miles paved
B. Mass Transit
i. horsecars were used to get citizens from one end of town to another, but they were too slow
ii. 1870 – New York begins using above-ground railways
a. NY, San Fran, and Chicago also experimented w/ cable cars
b. also, subways and the Brooklyn Bridge were revolutionizing mass transit
