A. new world, new ideas
i. in America, people began to believe in Darwin’s theory of evolution b/c it was a new idea, to which Americans were very perceptive to
a. many people also dismissed Darwinism b/c it went against almost every religious idea there was
ii. the late 19th century not only saw the rise of a liberal Protestantism in tune w/ new scientific discoveries, but the beginning of a new organized Protestant fundamentalism, which would make its presence felt in the 1920s and again in the 1980s
B. “Pragmatism”
i. the theory that modern society should rely for guidance not on inherited ideals and moral principals but on the test of scientific inquiry
a. no idea, institution, or even religious faith was valid unless it worked and stood the test of experience
C. Growth of Anthropology
i. b/c of Darwinism, Americans began to look at other cultures (especially Indians) in new ways
a. intellectuals saw Indian culture now as a coherent way to live, despite how different it was from American culture
