I. The Open Door
A. Hay’s “Open Door notes”
ii. w/ the exploitation of china, the US began to fear that their important trade relationship would be hindered
iii. so, John Hay proposed that all the countries looking for a piece of china simply leave trade open to the US in all areas
a. not all countries agreed, but the US declared that they did agree
b. despite publicly announcing final agreement of all countries, unless the US was willing to go to war, there was nothing America could do to stop the other countries from violating the open door policy
B. The Boxer Rebellion
i. boxers were a secret Chinese martial arts society who staged an uprising against foreigners in china
ii. the boxers managed to seize the entire foreign diplomatic corps and hold them hostage in Peking
a. in aug. 1900, however, the US fought its way into Peking and broke the siege
iii. since America did the other foreign countries a favor by saving the diplomatic corps, they gained respect and support for the open door policy and was able to retain it's lucrative trade with china
