I. Jackson Triumphant
A. New party system
1. Supporters of Quincy Adams were called National Republicans
a. Earned Federalist support
2. Supporters of Jackson were called Democratic Republicans
a. Earned support of people who opposed "economic aristocracy"
B. Campaign degenerated into a petty fight
1. Jacksonians charged Adams with gross waste and extravagance and using public funds to buy gambling devices (pool table and a chess set) for the White House
2. Adams's supporters called Jackson a murderer and they distributed a "coffin handbill"
a. Listed names of militiamen whom Jackson allegedly shot in cold blood during the War of 1812
b. The men were actually deserters who were sentenced execution legally after a court-martial
c. Called Jackson's wife a bigamist
a. Jackson married her when they thought that she had been divorced by her former husband
b. When she heard of the accusations she collapsed and died a few weeks later
C. Jackson won with 56% of the popular vote and 178 to 83 electorals
1. Jacksonians claimed a new era of democracy had begun
a. "era of the common man"
