I. The Old Northwest
A. Industrialization in the Old Northwest
i. in the 2 decades prior to the Civil War, the agricultural industrialization grew rapidly
a. the industry grew in 2 areas: agriculture (farm machinery); or relied on agricultural products (flour milling, meat packing, whiskey distilling, and the making of leather goods)
ii. most people who lived in the northwest weren’t white.
a. many Indians lived there and few blacks
iii. most people who lived in the northwest did however own large family farms and were not poor marginal farmers
B. Agricultural Specialization
i. most northwestern farms specialized in growing a certain crop (corn, wheat, cattle, sheep, hogs, and others)
a. this is b/c the farmers realized that with the growing European population, Europe needed American food imports to feed the more people
C. The ties between the northeast and northwest
i. since the northwest sold most of its crop to the northeast, it relied on the northeast purchasing power
ii. with the need to expand their selling power, the northwestern farmers began to expand into the prairie lands that the Indians had already previously cleared
a. the northwestern farmers also took advantage of the forests, creating a timber industry
D. New Agricultural Techniques
i. the new methods were less destructive to the soil than the old
a. farmers cultivated new wheat seed from spain and England
b. farmers brought in new cattle breeds
c. most important: new tools came onto the market
E. McCormick Reaper
i. 2 new important inventions:
a. automatic reaper
-invented by Cyrus H. McCormick of va., patented in 1834
-enabled 6 or 7 men to do in a day as much as 15 men w/ a sickle
b. thresher
-separate grain from wheat stocks
-could thresh 25 bushels in an hour, far more that when doing it by hand(7 bushels a day) or using animals to tread it (20 bushels a day)
F. Northwest Democracy
i. northwest considered itself the most democratic section of the country
a. mostly based on property, a white, middle class version of democracy (an increasingly popular view around the country)
