SOME INTERESTING INFORMATION

Gemstones in the Quartz Group - Noble but Affordable

Quartz gemstones have their own unique beauty, and they are as noble as much more expensive stones. Learn more about them here.

---------------------------------------------------------

Quartz and related minerals are very common in rocks on earth. Pieces of quartz minerals with gemstone quality are also fairly common and are therefore sold for an affordable prize. In spite of the generally law prize, these noble stones possess a unique beauty with a calming effect on the mind not found in other noble stones due to the color tunes, the color variation, the luster or the clarity that these minerals show. These gemstones therefore deserve a place in any jewelry collection, regardless of the economical strength of the owner.

Quartz is composed mainly of the elements silicone and oxygen, and have the chemical formula SiO2. Pure quartz is colorless, but foreign elements can give any possible color or color pattern to a piece of a quarz mineral.

Minerals in this group can show up as 6-sided transparent crystal prisms, as translucent lumps of small corny crystals, as translucent masses composed of microscopic crystals, and as amorphous glasses with variable transparency. Crystalline quartz minerals are fairly hard, of grade 7, while grade 10 is the hardest grade possible.

These are the most important gemstone minerals in the quartz group:

Ordinary corny quartz: This form of quartz consists of myriads of small, but still visible crystals lumped together, giving large pieces of a corny appearance. This form of quartz is translucent, but not transparent. It is often white, and it is then often mistaken for marble. This variant is most often just called quartz. It can also be brown, and is then called smoke quartz. A purple or violet variant is
called rose quartz.

Aventurine: Aventurine is a rock variant mostly composed of corny quartz. In addition there are small flat grains of other minerals with a metallic shimmer, for example the crom-compound fuchsite, giving the whole stone a metallic green or blue shine. The basic color of aventurine is most often green, but it can also be orange, brown, yellow or gray.

Corny quartz can be used both as jewels in adorns and to form larger artworks.

Rock crystal: This is big and clear crystals of quartz. They are fine to form with facets like a diamond. A cut rock crystal has a unique clear transparency and a splendid luster.

Citrine: Citrine is big and transparent crystals of quartz with red, yellowish or brown colour, often due to dissolved iron. Big brown quartz crystals are also often called smoke quartz.

Amethyst: Amethyst is quartz with big crystals with a unique beautiful violet color not found in any other gemstone.

Rock crystal and the related variants like amethyst are usually used in adorns where one crystal forms one jewel.

Calcedon: A piece of calcedon consists of a myriad of microscopic crystals. Calcedon is translucent and of a uniform greyish or grey-blue color and show a calm silky luster. Calcedon is formed inside cavities by gradual crystallization from a watery solution. The center of the specimen is often still hollow, and the innermost layer often consists of rock crystal.

Agate: Agate is often concidered a variant of calcedon. A complete agate specimen consists of multiple layers of microscopic crystals, one layer inside the other. A piece of agate is translucent, but not transparent. The layers give a beautiful pattern of bands of various colors when a specimen is cut through. All colors can be present, but most common are shades of brown, red-brown, blue-brown, blue and white. An agate is formed inside cavities by gradual crystallization from a watery solution one layer inside the other. The center of the specimen is often still hollow as in calcedon, and the innermost layer often consists of rock crystal or amethyst.

Onyx: An onyx specimen consists of microscopic crystals and is composed of layers with different colors, just like an agate. But in onyx the colored bands are stacked upon each other in a more parallel regular way. All layers together tend however to form a bowed wave-like pattern. The bands are often just a few. Most colors can occur in onyx, also white and black. Blue or purple is however lacking. Jewelers often cut out pieces from areas with specific colors and use these as gemstones. When jewelers speak about onyx, they usually talk about such pieces in black or other specific colors. The term "onyx" is also used about marble-related rock types with the same pattern of stacked layers. This kind of stone which does not contain quartz minerals is extensively used in artworks.

Carneol: Also a carneol specimen consist of microscopic crystals. Carneol is deep red and nearly not translucent at all.

Specimens of calcedon, agate onyx and carneol can be rather big. These stones can therefore be used both as jewels in adorns and to make larger artworks of a pecular beauty.

Opal: Opal is physically a sort of glass with microscopic water drops blended into its structure. The water causes a diffraction and interference of the light falling onto it that make the opal show a complicated silky color play. As opal is a rare stone, it is the most precious member of the quartz group.

Obsidian: Obsidian is a glass produced when magma erupted from volcanoes is cooling. Obsidian often contains small gass bubbles, soluted coloured substances or impurities. Obsidian can be transparent, translucent or totally opaque. The color is mostly green, white or whitish, but sometimes so dark that it is nearly black.

About Rubys, Sapphires and Related Gemstones

Rubies and sapphires belong to the mineral group corundum. Corundum is basically composed of aluminum and oxygen with the chemical formula Al2O3. Additive elements give the stones their characteristic colors. Corundum is very hard, with the degree 9 on the mohs scale, of which 10 is the hardest.

Crystals of corundum are fairly common in many volcanic rocks like syenite and metamorphic rocks like marble and gneiss. Single corundum crystals are common in the sand of beach and river shores. These originate from rock broken down. The crystals are typically six-sided blocks of variable size.

Pure crystals without faults are transparent and give a vivid luster. If a crystal consists of pure aluminum oxide it will also be colorless. These clear crystals are used as gemstones and are called white sapphires. Clear colorless corundum is also used in optical instruments.

Most corundum has however imperfect crystals and impurities that make them unclear or grey. These variants are used extensively in the industry as abrasives, for example is the sand in sand paper mostly made from corundum.

Transparent crystals of good quality with dissolved coloring elements are also used as gemstones, and some varieties obtain a high prize at the market.

Ruby is transparent corundum of red color due to presence of chromium in the crystal. A high valued ruby is usually strongly red like pigeon blood. Natural ruby crystals are seldom totally perfect, but generally contain inclusions of foreign minerals. The foreign elements are usually regarded as unwanted, and most natural rubys are heated or treated otherwise to make these elements less apparent. Important ruby deposits can be found in Tanzania, Madagascar, Vietnam, Nepal and Tajikistan.

Sapphire is the term for transparent corundum of other colors. Best known is the blue sapphire which gets that color from titanium dissolved in the crystal. Deep blue with some traces of purple is considered the finest color quality for blue sapphires. This variety gets the color form a combination of titanium and iron.

Sapphires can also be found in shades of yellow, green or pink. Sapphires of an orange-pink color, called padparadscha, is a very rare and beautiful variant and is sold for a high prize. The element vanadium will color a sapphire purple, iron will give a yellow or green color.

Sapphire can be found in Eastern Australia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, East Africa and various places in USA.

Since corundum has a simple composition, it can easily be manufactured synthetically by many methods. An early method still in use is the Verneuil process. It consists of treating aluminum powder with an oxygen-rich flame that is burning hydrogen. The produced corundum will drip off and is made to drop down into a boule and there form a single big crystal.

The crystals formed this way are of high quality and by adding other elements to the process, synthetic ruby and colored sapphire to be used as gemstones can be made. Most rubys and sapphires used today are synthetic.

Peyronie's Disease and Abnormally Bent Penis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Options

WHAT IS PEYRONIE'S DISEASE?

Peyronie's disease consists of hard, fibrous tissue, called plaques, developing within the penile shaft. The plaques are hard, thickened and stiff areas, actually a kind of internal scarring. In this fibroid tissue also calcium compounds can accumulate, making the plaques even harder.

The Peyronie's disease is also called cavernositis, and also sometimes plastic induration. There is probably a chronic inflammation process that leads to this scarring.

The thickened area has less blood flow than normal penile tissue, and do not fill with blood and swell as the normal spongy areas in the inside of the penis. Therefore the penis swells more at the opposite side, and gets a curvature towards the side containing the plaques when erected.

If the plaques are found at several places, more complex deformations will develop. The abnormal bending, twisting or swelling within the penis, often also lead to painful erections.

Any man from the age of 18 and upwards can develop Peyronie's disease. The average age of men suffering from Peyronie`s disease is 50.

THE SYMPTOMS AND CONSEQUENCES OF THE CONDITION

The three main characteristics of cavernositis are:

- One or more small hard lumps underneath the skin, or a continuous hard, stiff and thickened area.

- Abnormal bent or crooked penis when erect. All penises have some curvature, but by this disease, the penile bend increases, and one may get a very curved penis. The penis may be bent as a banana or in an angular fashion. The penile bending is most often up, but may be down, to the left side, to right or sloping.

-The bending is usually to the same side as that of the hard thickened area when the penis is erected.

-The hard areas in the erected penis may look like bumps, making the penis irregular.

- Sometimes the penis bends greatly enough to make sexual intercourse difficult, or impossible.

- Pain during erections caused by the pressure from the hard areas in the penis, or from the stretched skin at the opposite side of the penis.

- One may not notice the bend immediately, as it tends to develop over one to three months and later than the hardness and stiffness of the indurations.

- The plastic induration may progress and cause impotence. Sometimes the Peyroni's disease will clear up by itself, but this may take several years.

THE CAUSES OF PEYRONIE¨S DISEASE

The exact cause of the induration is unknown. It's not a sign of an underlying serious condition, and it is not a sexually transmitted infection. It is possible that the disease can begin with an inflammation in the penile tissue. An inflammation may be caused by an allergic or auto-immune reaction. Although the Peyronie's disease is not an infection, an initial infection can damage the penile tissue and cause an inflammation that develops into Peyronie's disease. Men having the inflammatory condition called Systemic Lupus Erytematosus more often get Peyronie's disease.

Vitamin E deficiency seems to be a contributing factor in causing the disease. Diabetes may cause damage of blood vessels, and if this damage occurs in the erectile bodies of the penis, Peyronie's disease can develop. Peyronie's disease is sometimes a side effect of the drug Inderal (propanolol) used against high blood pressure.

Sometimes a physical injury to the penis that causes internal bleeding, or a series of such injuries, is the initial cause. A habit of violent sexual activity may cause such injuries. It is thought that some men may have a genetic disposition to the condition.

Plastic induration of the penis is not a cancer, and cannot cause cancer, however a lump or deformation in your genitals that develops, must be examined.

TREATMENT OG PEYRONIE'S DISEASE

Not all men with Payronie's disease require treatment. The disease sometimes go away by itself. If the condition is pronounced, it is also difficult to find a remedy that can cure every sign of the disease, but several methods can take away most penis changes associated with Peyronie's. Here is a survey of treatment methods used today.

Tamoxifen - In its early stages of the disease a medication called Tamoxifen has been shown to prevent the formation of the fibrous plaque by Peyronie's disease. This drug is also used in the treatment of breast cancer, but the two conditions are not related.

Vitamin E and B - Vitamin E and B is sometimes effective in easing the pain and as a treatment for the penile deformity by Peyronie's disease.

Verapamil - Verapamil, often used in the treatment of high blood pressure, has been shown to decrease the size of the plaque and decrease the pain when injected directly into the plaque, and thus also improve the penis shape distortion by peyronie's disease.

Shock wave therapy - Extracorporeal shock wave therapy, or ESWT, a new treatment, is being used in some hospitals for the Peyronie's disease. Although the initial results of this new approach to treat Peyronie's disease have been promising, the long-term outcome is still undetermined.

Surgery - This is sometimes considered if Payroni's disease has lasted for a year or more and it hasn't progressed or regressed for at least three months. By the Nesbitt procedure one removes tissue opposite to the curve to straighten the penis. Another procedure involves putting a graft or part of a vein within the fibrous plaque to lengthen this area. In certain cases of Pyrenees disease, surgical insertion of a penile prosthesis (implant) is recommended.

Radiation therapy - This treatment modality has been tried, but the results are unpredictable and sometimes the opposite of the intended one.

Traction devices - On the market, you can buy mechanical devices to use on the penis some time daily that gently pull upon the penile tissue to straighten out the penis, and thus mending the penis from the curvature caused by Peyronie's disease.

About Hypothyroidism - a Common Health Problem

By hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland is producing too less hormones to stimulate the metabolism or the body is not able to utilize the hormones. The lack of thyroid hormones slows down the metabolism and thus all the activities in the body, giving a combination of many symptoms related to slowness of bodily processes.

Hypothyroidism is common, but the frequency of the condition is not well determined. Some authorities estimate that 0.5% of the total American population have the disease to some degree. The frequency is much greater among people over 50 years of age than among young people.

THE SYMPTOMS AND COMPLICATIONS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

The most common early symptoms are: Mental and physical fatigue, weakness, weight gain or over-weight, and depression.

One or more of these symptoms also use to appear early: Constipation, sensitivity to coldness, cold hands and feet, thick tongue, decreased sweating, dry hair, thin brittle hair, thin brittle nails, muscle and joint pain, pale or yellowish skin.

One or more of these symptoms usually appear later: Poor memory, slow thought process, drowsiness, slow speech, thinning of eyebrows, hoarseness, poor circulation, dry and flaky skin, decreased taste and smell, menstrual irregularities, skin thickening, puffy face, puffy hands and feet, swelling of extremities, overall swelling, muscle spasms, muscle atrophy, joint stiffness.

In children or young persons hypothyroidism may give developmental problems, like disturbed tooth development and short stature.

Hypothyroidism increases the risk of elevated cholesterol levels, heart disease and diabetes (diabetes mellitus). This occurs even by moderately decreased thyroid production.

THE THYROID GLAND AND ITS HORMONES

To understand the hypothyroidism, some knowledge about the thyroid gland and its hormones is essential.

The thyroid gland produces hormones that accelerate and in other wise regulate metabolism. A part of metabolism is the process of breaking down energy containing nutrients, and using the energy to produce molecules that all the processes and activities in the body use as fuel. Another part is the production of molecules that the body use as building materials.

The thyroid makes four hormones: Thyroxin (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), diiodothyronine (T2) and monoiodothyronine (T1). The hormones contain iodine, and the figures tell about the number of iodine atoms in each hormone molecule. T3 is not made directly, but is produced from T4. T3 is a more efficient hormone than T4. Therefore this conversion is important.

The pituitary, a gland under the brain, produces a hormone called thyrotropin or thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) that enhances the activity of the thyroid gland. If the body has too less thyroid hormone in the blood, the pituitary produces more thyrotropin. This makes the thyroid gland speed up its own production. By a too heavy thyroid hormone concentration, less thyrotropin is produced by the pituitary, and the thyroid gland slows down. This feed-back mechanism regulates the metabolism of the whole body.

THE MECHANISMS AND CAUSES OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

By hypothyroidism the body does not get enough thyroid hormone, or the hormones do not work effectively in the body. This causes the metabolism to slow down. When the metabolism decreases, the processes in the body do not get enough fuel and building materials, and all the body activities will therefore slow down. Energy containing nutrient will also be stored as fat, since they are not broken down.

Serious variants of hypothyroidism are called myxedema. This is a rare condition. However, less serious, but painful variants are common. There are several reasons for hypothyroidism, each giving a variant of the disease:

*An autoimmune reaction against the thyroid tissue can destroy the capability of the thyroid gland to produce hormones (for example Hashimoto's disease).

*Sometimes the production of T3 by conversion from T4 is impaired. The total amount of hormones may be normal in these cases, but the body is still lacking T3, and gets the symptoms of hypothyroidism.

*Iodine deficiency can cause hypothyroidism, since the thyroid hormones contain iodine. In Europe and America the food is seldom short in iodine, but bad nutrition may result in iodine deficiency.

*Surgery or radiation at the thyroid area can destroy enough tissue to cause hypothyroidism.

*Injury or disease in the pituitary or of the part of the brain controlling the pituitary may cause a decrease in secreted thyrotropin, and then the thyroid will respond by producing less of its own hormones with hypothyroidism as a result.

*Some people have symptoms of hypothyroidism even though the amount of thyroid hormone in the blood is normal. One of the symptoms is raised levels of thyrotropin, indicating that the body signals need for more thyroid hormones. This variant may be caused by conditions elsewhere in the body that make it difficult for the hormone to reach their destination in the cells. In many of these cases the immune system produces anti-bodies against the thyroid hormones. This variant is called sub-clinical hypothyroidism, and responds to the same treatment as ordinary hypothyroidism.

*Some types of food can contribute to a depressed thyroid function or aggravate hypothyroidism when eaten raw in great amounts: Brussel sprouts, broccoli, corn oil, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, radishes, rutabaga, soy and turnips. By cooking these vegetables, the depressing effect is decreased.

*Factors suspected for causing hypothyroidism are: The artificial sweetener aspartame, mercury pollution, dental fillings containing mercury, fluoride and heavy metal pollution.

HOW CAN HYPOTHYROIDISM BE TREATED

For serious hypothyroidism caused by tissue destruction, external supplement of thyroid hormones is necessary.

When the condition is caused by lack of iodine in the diet, dietary changes and iodine supplements will be a part of the treatment.

Less serious, but painful hypothyroidism is sometimes also treated with hormone supplements. In these cases it is difficult to find the right dose, and treatment may result in hormone poisoning.

You can sometimes alleviate hypothyroidism by reducing the amount of food suspected for depressing the thyroid function: Brussel sprouts, broccoli, corn oil, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, radishes, rutabaga, soy, soy products and turnips. However, these food types are valuable in many ways, so it is probably not wise to cut them out totally. Also try to avoid artificial ingredients like the sweetener aspartame, conserving additives and fluoride.

Changing out mercury dental fillings and avoiding mercury or heavy metal exposure may help to ameliorate the condition.

You may also alleviate the condition by eating food that stimulates the thyroid function according to practical experience: Chia seed, dulse, fish from the ocean, flax seed, pumpkin seed, seaweed, coconut and brewer yeast.

You can find nutritional supplements to help for hypothyroidism. The compositions of these products vary:

*They may contain building materials that the thyroid uses to make its hormones, for example: iodine, acetyl-L-tyrosine or L-phenylalanine.

*They may also contain vitamins and minerals that stimulate the mechanism of hormone production by being a part of necessary enzymes, or by helping the absorption of the ingredients that hormones are made from, like: Magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper and vitamin E.

*They may furthermore contain constituents that stimulate tissue regeneration by being part of tissue building enzymes, and thus helping to restore a degraded thyroid, for example: Folic acid or folate, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid or pantothenate), B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (cyanocobalamin) and molybdenum.
