's message, "What are your pageant experiences? How many titles have you WON not just participated in?" on 10/19/03 1:24pm
I don't know who you are referring to but I will address the issue concerning my daughter (since you posted right under her post) who is a teen and does teach a "few" younger girls and a couple older girls.
Kristen has never claimed to be a "coach". In all her posts she has only said she will teach. Afterall, a "coach" does have to start somewhere and usually it's with "teaching". As someone said on another board, "I'm sure all these other teachers of modeling had to start somewhere and they probably started at a young age." I do believe if you knew these "teen girls", (as you have put it), you would know they have more than one or two titles between themselves. They not only have pageant modeling experience but also professional experience as well. They are both very well rounded in what they do in pageants, academics, athletically, socially, and on the public side of main issues facing today's society.
Speaking for my daughter, her resume speaks for itself. As per your request, her most recent titles are as follows:
Teen Miss Lafayette Parish 2003
Miss Louisiana Teen America Princess 2003
Jr. Miss Baker Buffalo Festival 2003
Supreme Miss Liberty 2002
Jr. Miss Breaux Bridge 2001
Rice Festival Queen 2002
Miss New Iberia Mardi Gras 2001
Louisiana Farmers Day Queen 2002
America's Cover Miss Supreme 2002
1st Runner-up State Cover Miss Beauty (Taila Buck was the queen)
She once competed on the "beauty pageant" circuit but became so disgusted with the way some people try to run others into the ground that she left this circuit and began competing for something which would give her the chance to be herself and work for a good cause. She competes for festival titles, city titles, parish titles and scholarship pageants, etc.
Her experience list is as follows: Competitive gymnast for 14 1/2 years. She has won many State level competitions and has been continually ranked in the top 6 in her age and level category in Louisiana. She has trained with many well known coaches (they once began as teachers before they became coaches) and former olympian gymnasts. Kristen has danced for 10 years, not as a competition dancer but only to maintain her grace for her balance beam and floor dance moves. (The dance was mandatory by her former coach.)
Kristen has been a cheerleader for 7 years and is a two-time All American. She has cheered during the Orange Bowl and was invited to cheer at the Hula Bowl. She has been to state and regional cheerleading competitions all the while being recognized for her dance, cheer style, and gymnastics, etc.
Kristen has been scouted by Pro Images modeling agency in Georgia and has most recently been signed with an agency in Baton Rouge. She is preparing for MB Expo in May.
Kristen has been doing pageantry since she was 15 months old. She has won many local "beauty" pageants, state pageants, scholarship pageants, city pageants, parish pageants, and festival pageants. Kristen also does not compete every weekend. At the present time, Kristen is Teen Miss Lafayette Parish (a festival title) and Miss Louisiana Teen America Princess (a scholarship pageant). With her festival title comes a contract in which she agreed to not compete for one year and work fearlessly for the platform she has chosen.
Kristen's platform is the American Cancer Society and the Miles Perret Center. She has traveled nearly 5,000 miles since her crowning, all the while promoting the Acadiana area and her platform. She has given public speaches, she has read to school age children, she has attended several Relay for Life rallys, she is preparing for the Breast Cancer Symposium in Lafayette on October 21st, she has helped with a St. Judes Telethon and the list goes on. She has helped to MC, audit, and judge small local pageants as Teen Miss Lafayette Parish.
Kristen's former coaches of modeling are Lou Melancon, Muriel Sonnier and Kimberly Newman Duhon. Kristen had never dreamed or even thought about teaching until she was approached at a pageant about helping some much younger girls. As time went on, a few others asked for help and then older girls began calling her or approaching her at pageants where she was a visiting queen. She has been very upfront with these people when they ask her to help. She tells them that she is not the big "glitzy" modeling type and if they want someone who can take them to that point she gladly refers them to her former modeling teachers or other big name teachers. Kristen, as well as myself, have even been on these boards referring other modeling teachers.
Kristen is a young teen who enjoys doing pageants but more importantly she loves children and wants to give back to them. She doesn't claim to be better than anyone but, she does feel she has something to offer to the younger girls just starting out.
She only puts her name on the boards to give people an option. There are so many young girls wanting help but only a few people around to help. Kristen has great aspirations of being successful and not being what others want her to be. She is her own person and stands tall for what she believes in.
If you people, who continue to get on these boards and always have something negative to say about these "young ladies" would know what these girls go through in their respective high schools you would be amazed. They not only have to live with the jealous peers in their schools but have to have grown adults come on here and try to run them into the ground. To see them strive above the jealousy they have to endure, and to still care and want to help makes me very proud of them. They are truely role models for the much younger.
I ask that you look at what these young ladies are trying to do. They are only trying to help. If you don't think they're qualified to teach your daughter then that's your opinion but unless you've given either of them a chance then you have no idea what they're capable of. They both have a lot of respect for the bigger, more experienced modeling teachers and they both are quick to refer girls on to these ladies if they don't feel they are qualified. If someone is looking for teachers for little girls just starting out or even just the local beauty pageant scene, then I feel these two girls are good enough for that. Speaking for Kristen, she has said, "Come and try me out, if you do not think I'm the person for your child that is fine, but you never know until you try."
As a mother, I am very proud of my daughter. She is not a "follower", she is a leader. She stands firm on her beliefs of the "teen issues" and doesn't care what others think. Just last week she was honored by being chosen for the Governor's program to promote abstinance. She is a junior in high school and is looking to the future. By continuing to work with young girls she is preparing herself for the future and hopefully giving them the strength and insight to be their own person. She considers this fun but has dreams of having her own studio after she goes to college. Personally, I commend her for this. Many great business people have had to start somewhere to become successful and I believe these young girls are doing just that.
If anyone wants to question Kristen's ability then why don't you e-mail me and I will be happy to give you my home phone number and speak with you. If you want to see Kristen's resume then by all means, e-mail me and I will be happy to send you a copy. I will even give you references if you want to go that far.
Sincerely,
Robin Abshire
