I think it’s sad how Canada and Australia have turned away from Britain for close defence arrangements and have become closer to the USA. However, I can hardly blame them for this, as we have prompted this by our own actions.

By the time Blair and Hoon have finished with our armed forces, the British Army will have been demoted to the “Royal British Peacekeepers” division of the European Army. The RAF on the other hand will serve only to ferry the Blairs to their latest free holiday destination. Meanwhile, the RN, with its fleet of fisheries protection vessels will be relegated to harassing local fishermen in the North Sea who should happen to deprive Spanish trawlers of fish.

makes complete sense though. When Australia were under direct threat of invasion by the Japanese Churchill wouldnt release our soldiers to defend their own land, he had them fighting for sand in North Africa, luckily we told him to get stuffed and our guys came home to beat the japs. Thats just a historical case that shows where Commonwealth nations stand in the eyes of the British government.

but look at the geography, Canada borders with America so of course they see the US as a better strategic partner. Australia is a continent between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, so having a small island nation tucked away in the North Atlantic as a major defence partner is not really feasable.

If the FCS ever comes about then this will of course change however with the UK's position in the EU that is looking forever in doubt. Also many Europeans call for a combined EU military doesnt leave any room for Australia and Canada cooperating with britains forces, sad, but nevertheless true.
