In 1934, Western Australia voted 2 to 1 to leave the Commonwealth of Australia and become a separate dominion of the British Empire.

HMG in London said that it couldn't accept such a move unless HMG in Canberra was in favour of it. Which it wasn't.

If it didn't work 70 years ago, it's hard to imagine it working now.
