The eminently sensible people of Australia may have told Charlie to sod off, but I doubt that they would do the same to William. Indeed, I read an article in a newspaper some months ago suggesting that very thing. The poor lad is so popular, especially among the younger female contingent, in every English-speaking country round the world, that they'd probably even have him as Governor General in the USA.

On the other hand, this may just be British metropolitan prejudice. We see Charles as an upright, old-fashioned, reserved, rather smartly-dressed old chap, and so we never imagine that the Aussies would have him. But William wears sneakers and baseball-caps and does watersports, and so we can't imagine why the Aussies wouldn't have him... Bit hypocritical of us, that.

And as for getting him to marry an Australian, I think that'd be a great idea, but I bet a pound to a penny that they make him marry a European.

But the Whitlam government (1972-75) did everything it could to deny the existence of history, even going so far as to change the wording on our banknotes from "Commonwealth of Australia" to plain "Australia", for some daft reason that escapes me now.
