Date Posted: 14:54:47 12/10/04 Fri I've often thought that Australia is rather like Cornwall: inhabited all round the edges but more or less empty and uninhabitable in the middle. But of course in Britain itself there are those who argue that we need more and more people. There is, after all, a labour-shortage, which I think is pretty much unique in the developed world. The snag is that there is also a housing shortage. A Singaporean chap (well, British, but you know what I mean) said the other day, "It would be fine if Britain just got with the programme and built upwards like everyone else."
