] Date Posted: 01:33:05 11/27/04 Sat Here are some benefits to the federation for certain countries and regions: UK - an alternative to the EU which can give Britain a stronger global future and more of a reason to get out of the EU without the fear of being isolated. Canada - strengthens Canada's position vis-a-vis the USA, removing the fear of American domination and gives it a good chance to diversify its trade globally. Australia and New Zealand - opens up more markets and guarantees the same power on both sides of the Pacific, keeping better control of that region. USA - a much stronger ally in times of trouble which is a next door neighbour. Europe - access to other markets via free trade with the UK to NATFA and South-East Asia. Commonwealth - breathes new economic and political life into the Commonwealth, opening up opportunities for members to join the federation if their economies are in good shape and they are democratic. All - combatting regionalism and tying together markets all over the globe and providing another new and democratic power in the defence of freedom. Each other - strengthens our traditional ties and reinstates our lost trading links while maintaining the new trading links forged more recently. A bigger voice in world issues would be gained. I would not rule out membership of the Pacific islands and the Caribbean. With the Federation being on both sides of the Pacific, it may be to the advantage of the islands in between to join. The islands of the Caribbean, such as Barbados, may be interested in joining as CARICOM links up with NAFTA. There is already talk of the Turks and Caicos Islands possibly joining Canada. French would be protected in Quebec as Welsh would be protected in Wales as they are now. Even though this would be predominantly an English-speaking power, there is no reason why these other languages should not exist within the federation as they do now. Creating the federation would involve little real change as a common form of government and a common head of state already exist. I see it as a win-win-win situation all round and worthy of endorsement for economic and political reasons. It is not for nostalgia for reviving red or pink bits on the world map. Basically, we are aiming at the amalgamation of four similar nations to gain economic and political strength for themselves. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
