Because there are 9 innings in baseball, 3 periods in hockey, 2 halves in American football and 5 players on a basketball team.

Multiply the innings by hockey periods and then multiply that by American football halves. Now take that value and subtract the number of basketball players on a team by the hockey periods times football halves and add the same.

The equation is x = 2(Baseball*Hockey) - (Basketball(Hockey*Football)+(Hockey*Football)) or

x = 2(9*3) - (5(3*2)+(3*2))

x = 18

The time consumed by the average Arkansas college student to solve the above equation is the same amount of time to complete said number of holes in golf. This is why there are 18 holes. It is true!!!

Actually, doesn't it have something to do with the number of pulses in a single phrase of a 9/8 march?
