Waiting For the Girls



hanging in front of the corner store

waiting for the girls

cigarette smoke whiter

than the clouds overhead

God the air stinks today

river looks like an open sewer

the trees hang limper than....

do you know a dirty joke?

hey I got one....

an old lady drags her feet

down the sidewalk

doesn't look at us

Bill kicks at a candy wrapper

Jimmy squints makes silly noises

Tom just sticks his fingers in the

loops of his jeans

and paces

nose high in the air

we're running out of dirty words

wish we had some pot

the owner of the cornerstore

peers out in dark suspicion

we're beginning to wonder

if the girls'll ever come

and just when we think all is lost

someone turns a corner patches out

then takes off

tires squealing

slap each other's hands
