You have to have a qualifying technical degree in order to take the Patent Bar Exam. An accredited Engineering degree meets USPTO technical requirements. Most attorneys
do not have Engineering degrees and are not allowed to
take the exam.

Once you meet all requirements and pass the exam, you would be a registered patent agent with the ability to practice patent law in front of the USPTO. Practice in front of the PTO involves the preparation and prosecution of patent applications. This can move your career into the area of Intellectual Property.

If you go on and get a law degree, you can then qualify for having the title of patent attorney. Even if you do not go towards getting a law degree, your experience and Engineering insight can be highly valuable to practicing attorneys. There are about 6K agents and 21K patent attorneys registered to practice patent law.

You define the benefit to you based on your own aspirations.
The challenges of solving problems apply to both Engineering and the area of Intellectual Property law.
