Subject: Toxic Spill.

Leslie:

I am sorry to hear about your childs illness.
I applaud your efforts aimed at seeing if there is an unusally high number of Aurora children with Cancer.
I believe there are also a number of adults who are also dealing with a Cancer diagnosis.

Cllr. Evelina Mc Eachern has mentioned your concerns to myslef, and a number of residents who share your concern and are interested to pursue the true Cancer rate in our Town.

The "spill" you mentioned occurred in Mid May ....
On August 21st. I was at the meeting when Council directed
staff to contact the RCMP.
Who in turn, have contacted the
Federal, Environmentla Protection Branch.

Any resident can obtain a copy of the Staff report
that was placed onto Town Councils agenda recently.
Just call 727-1375 and ask for the Clerks Dept.
It was on the Council agenda on August 21, item # 15 Re: Containmation of the Holand River, East Branch.

It is quite informative paper
(but does not provide answers, rather suggestionns re; "lesons to be learned").

It does clearly outline the list of chemicals taht were present and detected by the Consultant hired by the Town.

Council directed staff on August 21st. to contact the RCMP to assist. That contact has resulted in the spill information being forwarded to Environment Canada's Environmantal Protection Branch on Dufferin St, to The Manager of Emergencies & Enforcement Branch.

Of serious concern in (late June) a Town Councillor, was reportedly hospitalised, within ten minutes of inhaling fumes from above the storm drains at a business site on Industrial parkway South that was part of the area being looked at as the potential source of the spill.

Sensibly after hearing this (late June) Town staff refusd to work on the site , until conslusive tests identified the substance. The MOE results reportedly suggested that there was no cause for any immediate health concern. The whole incident was downplayed at the time as being "MINOR"

The costs to the Aurora taxpayers are being stated as approx. $130,000 up to this point.

The impact of the chemicals listed in those concentrations detected has not been made public at this time.

Alarmingly, it appears to date, (now September )
the Town still doesn't know whether it's
still "seeping in from the soil, or whether it was "dumped or spilled " into the storm sewer, this is of greta concern not only in the short term but long term also.

Presonally, after following this issue for three months, I;m relieved that the Federal Dept is now reviewing the matter. Let's hope their investigation is expert & thorough.
Let's hope that some reassurances can be given to Aurora residents that all relevant legislation was complied with nd that all reasonable actions have been and are still being underatken.

To find out more :
Contact the Mayor & Councillors at 727-1375

The public deserves, to have a "conclusive detrmination"
as to what if any damage has been done, what if any harm may still exist to the public at large, if the fumes were to be inhaled by anyone else.

It is hoped that if investigations lead to a conclusive source, then appropriate action will be undertaken to legally address such behaviour.

I encourage all
