Subject: Alternative to pesticides - and really easy too!!

I have about 8 weeds in my front lawn (which I'm too lazy to pull) - which is a testament to natural weed management. See instructions below.

STARTING

Over seed your lawn twice a year: once in June and once in October (before the snow). The October seeding will sprout the new growth the following April.

10 kilos does a lot sized 130' x 60', and can be purchased from garden centres for $34. The grass sprayer can be purchased from Home Depot or Canadian Tire for apx $18.

CARE

De-THATCHING

Don't!! Did you know that worms are wonderful de-thatchers?

In the spring, they will pull that ugly thatch down below the grass root for food, at the same time aerating your lawn by leaving tiny holes all over the garden that will allow the grass roots to breath.

Just think of the tim, effort and bad backs you can save by not de-thatching the lawn.....!

LENGTH OF GRASS

Grass length shouldn't be less than 4". Weeds thrive in short, thin grass. Weeds need light to survive, so by cutting the grass longer, making it more dense starves the weeds.

WATERING

Did you know you don't need to water every week?

Water in the early morning 5am-8am for 2 hours every 2 weeks. This will give the roots enough nourishment to give you a great carpet of through the summer (which feels great on bare feet ), as well as abiding by the yearly York Region water rationing.

CUTTING

As the grass length is probably 1"-2" longer than you would normally leave, you will need to cut the lawn every 5-6 days to keep it looking wonderful.

In the spring (April/May), collect the grass cuttings, as the lawn may be damp causing the the mulch to rot the grass below it.

The rest of the year mulch the grass cuttings back onto the lawn. This provides protection against searing summer sun, and adds the nutrient back into the soil.

Good Luck !!!
