You better go by this game, you said yourself your not doing anything.
Anyway
1) Crafting is not neccessary. While it will provide you better equipment, you can simply buy crafted items from others. You can't lvl by crafting, crafting is like in daoc except you need to use looted items to get the proper ingrediants for crafting. So, it would be difficult to be a craft mule, better just to craft with your main.
2) I would say that there is alot of balance between the classes. Human/Archers are seen as the best power-lvling class but from what i read lack in pvp. As with Daoc, range seems to be somewhat important so missle/magic have an advantage in pvp. In pve, high lvl mele do really well, especially since the higher lvl mobs hit so hard, fully trained mele have a great advantage as most mob damage comes from mele attacks and they can avoid them the best. If you want to be a mele, the human/defender is a good class.
Tumerok Feral Intendant is the most powerful damage doer, but lacks for group friendly spells like the defender.
Soloing is very possible depending on your class, the pet classes do very well of course, so do archers and mele at the higher lvl.
In the end, play what ever you want, they are all viable.
3) Well, no. The way the skills are set up there is magic in every skill-tree. So even if you went mele- you would still have to take some magic skills that would benefit your mele. Plus, just like in AC, you will need magic to be the best you can. However, taking magic here would in no way gimp your mele ability, only enhance it.
Portal spells exist just like in AC. Only difference here is that they are treated just like skills you have to purchase. However, from what i could tell, they really arent that needed as there are lots of portals to use to get around.
4) Should hit store shelves ready to play on 11/22. And playing on Thistledown, of course.
Feel free to ask any other questions.
