Rambus based platforms considerable outperform DDr platforms. Intel has staked it's future ability to continue to raise cpu performance on rambus.

Rambus ability to handle high data flow is what will lead to continued speed increases and ddr will slowly fade out like the 8-track.

Rambus technology is not proprietary to Intel. Rambus is an independent company that licenses its use. AMD simply has not decided to use rambus in its machines.

Under normal computer use, you won't see much difference between rambus and ddr. However, running video/audio programs/3D applications is where Rambus shines outperforming DDR up to alomst 50% better performance.

While Rambus is slightly more costly, you can run the same programs with less rambus than DDR.

Example, with a P3-533 system, and 384 rd-ram, ti-4200 card, I run AC2 relatively well for such a low processor speed.
