Hank William Sr. Memorial Chapter Ride

22 Jun 03

Let me start by saying I didn’t know what to expect on this ride but as usual it was a great ride. My hats off to Mr. Bart Koepke for putting this ride together and also heading it up as the Road Captain, he did a great job. Thanks Bart!

The day started out with everybody meeting at the dealership Sunday morning and we had a good turnout. We had nine bikes and eleven folks, out of those we had four new people riding with us for the first time. They were Ted and Rosie Highers and Kelly and his wife Nancy and I would like to say thanks to them for joining with us on this ride and I hope they come back for many more rides in the future.

We headed out along Lewis Turner to hwy 85 to John Sims Pkwy and then north onto hwy 285. At first the weather didn’t appear that it was going to be in our favor but, as we pressed on it turned out to be our friend on this day. Once we reached Lucky 13 Truck Stop we made our first stop of the day so that everybody could grab a drink and a snack before we headed out onto the second leg of our journey.

Upon leaving Lucky 13 we continued north on hwy 285 until we reached hwy 331. We turned north onto hwy 331 towards Paxton and the Alabama State line. Just before we crossed the state line we lost our two tail gunners for a minute or two because that had to stop and put their headgear on due to the fact that Alabama does have a helmet law. But never fear they caught right back up just as quickly as they stopped. We proceeded on through Paxton and then to Florala and then to our next stop, which was to be Andalusia for gas and refreshments. This was a little bit of a ride for a couple of folks but after they stretched their legs, topped off their fuel tanks and grabbed a beverage they were ready to head on down the road.

At this point we were about 35 miles from our final destination of Georgiana, Al and the Hank Williams Sr. Museum. We headed north on hwy 55, which by the way, was a great stretch of 4 lane road, for a nice relaxing ride on the last leg of our journey to our destination. Upon our arrival there, we found that we were just a little early and the museum was not yet open and we had a half hour to kill. But, this was not a problem for this group. It gave us time to take some very nice pictures, which will be posted on the web site and gave everybody a chance to unwind and relax on the huge front porch of the museum in the rocking chairs that were provided. It also gave us time to soak up the local atmosphere of this quite little town but before we knew it the museum was open.

It was a site to see and well worth the ride there and I do believe all had a good time. There were numerous photographs, records, clothing items and many other items that were just a small part of this legends short life. It is impossible to tell you everything that there was; you just have to see it. After being there almost 2 hours everybody was getting hungry so we headed out to take in some of the local country cooking. We stopped at a place called the Kozy Korner II and let me tell you, other than the service being very slow the meal was great. Everyone had plenty to eat at a very fair price and I would recommend stopping there to eat if you’re ever there.

After everyone filled up their bellies we mounted up and head out for the ride home. We turned south on to hwy 55 back to Andalusia and proceeded south towards Baker but one more stopped was needed just north of Baker for the “Harley” to get gas so it was a great time for a break. From here everybody began their ride home. It was a great ride and I wish that more folks would have been able to make the ride because, all that were not able to go were missed.

But, one curse was laid to rest and what curse was that? It was the rain curse that has been following Gail. The weather was great as well as the ride and it was just an all around great day. Until next time keep the rubber side down, the shinny side up and the wind in your face.
