In Search of Freedom

More than a hundred thousand
carrying unbearable burdens
all fleeing from oppression
leaving loved ones far behind
a quest to liberate their land.

Prisoners of conscience
young children, nuns, monks
denied the right to opinion
no freedom of expression
all loyal to their heritage.

Forced to leave their own land
their animals, belongings, they
cross the hazardous Himalaya
unprotected, unshod, unfit
too many crosses left behind.

Another twenty days to go
empty stomachs unsatisfied
snow-blind, shoes worn thru�
all struggle to reach sanctity
their temporary haven Nepal.

Desperate for refugee status
permission to travel onwards
to return would be to torture.
Three days of rest and food
then onward to Dharamsala.

The end of their pilgrimage
an audience with their leader
to whom prayers are offered
the Dalai Lama�s blesses them
all are then urged to return.
