lovers they are not,
brothers they are,
one is frightened inexplicably
of the domineering morning,
whose threats are now ghostlike
through the thinnly-woven curtains,
the fair-haired one's head is full
of screams long forgotten, silent as
the dust motes falling to their
deaths on the hardwood floor.
The dark-haired one, cuddled to the
fair-haired one hidden in shadow,
the fringed scraps of silk that are
his eyelashes casting soft darkness
on his sweet face.
a dead father awaits their memories
if they should wake, and a drunken mother
lying lifelessly amidst tangled sheets.
so we leave these precious boys, tread
softly so as they won't wake, one fearing
the morning, the other merely fearing
