Fourth Installment
titled
Horse and Buggy

Close to midmorning leonard reminds barrister Conklin of his engagement with Mary Carls.
He notices to himself that his thinking is scattered. Using words like engagement with Mr. Conklin. He mutters to himself, 'what a wreck.'

As noon approaches he takes leave. Having no hat to take but his coat. Leonard leaves the offices of Conklin and Hite to the sidewalk. He looks to his right to Keets Lane a quarter of a mile away. Leaving in hopes of finding her and Ruphert walking fro.

As a gentleman does, Leonard crosses to the other side to walk to. Starring down the sidewalk the noise of the street disappears. He steps off the curb to cross. A stallion pulling a buggy at a fair pace is five yards to his left. Leonard is still looking down the street. In the street now. Then a startling from a horse. He looks to his left. The stallion with his right hoove strikes him in the left shoulder; then, recoiling his right front leg grazes him in the head. At that moment he is turned toward the horse leaning back it seem or falling. With the horses momentum and pulling up the stallion strikes his right leg down and hit Leonard in the chest with his left hoove. Leonard is knocked out now lying on the ground.

Mary and Ruphert are some two-hundred yards away when they both notice a disturbance up ahead. Mary had just mentioned what an ackward male Leonard proves to be. Ruphert then says, 'I think there is something up ahead...Yes, ackward, not as ackward as a Hat Shop Purveyor...I think this is serious, Mary.'

Quickly enough on a busy street a physician appears. With his apothocarry bag in hand takes out his stethoscope. Listening to his chest, and hearing no beat, the doctor shakes his head.Right about then Ruphert and Mary come jogging up.

The doctor glances to his left and right and notices Mary and Ruphert. The doctor then speaks, 'Do you know this man.'
Mary answers, 'Yes.'
Ruphert stammers, 'We were to come visit him at his place of work. Here it is, Barristers Conklin and Hite.'

Leonards Lament

The physician tries to console Mary. Speedily a horse and a cart shows up. The doctor instructs that he must be taken to the Roman Catholic Church out of town. He tells Ruphert, 'These are just concerns. An accident like this involving livestock deserves great concern.'

Mary goes into Leonards place of business. As Mr. Conklin and Mr. hite were about to go out to the ruckus. Mary says to their procession, 'Leonards dead.'

Just as the sun was setting Mary and Ruphert find themselves at the church. Leonard was taken away before Mary had a last chance to look at him. Mary had to go with Ruphert and see him one last time.

Ruphert goes into the church, leaving Mary outside. Ruphert comes out again and tells Mary they can go see him. He is in the basement in repose. Ruphert says to Mary, 'We can go see him. He's in the basement in repose. The nun said the door is open.'

They both enter the basement. He is the only one down there. She goes up to him and stares. She then says, 'Why?' Mary then leans down and kisses his cold lips.

Middle of the night. Leonard opens his eyes and gasps for a breath. He doesn't know where he is. It is so dark. He tries to recognize anything. Feeling around, notices he is on a stone slab. Sees a crack of light and makes for what must be a door.

Finding his way for the door Leonard has to get outside to revive. Stumbling through the door and up the stone steps. Stumbling forward even more he catches himself, then catches his steps again. Now he's running.

Running through the trees he keeps trying to wake up. He slows down finally feeling he is awake. 'Not dreaming.' he mutters to himself. He then steps on a twig. His hearing clears and running water is the sound. The Thames. He goes to the bank. Lurches down and splashes water on his face.
