You will probably find the entry procedure fairly straightforward because you have a passport and other essential documents

You will be interviewed by a Canada Customs officer. You will need to give the officer a list of all the household and personal items that you will be bringing into Canada.

You should also show the immigrant visa to the customs officer, who will refer you to an immigration officer.

The immigration officer will check your visa and travel documents and ask you questions similar to those on the Immigrant Application Form, to verify that you are of good character and in good health.

At this time, you may also be asked to show proof of your funds. If there are no difficulties, the officer will authorize your entry to Canada as a permanent resident by signing your Record
of Landing or Confirmation of Permanent Residence.

If you arrive at one of the major Canadian airports, you will get a booklet called Welcome to Canada: What You Should Know.

It has information on most aspects of life in Canada. It also provides addresses and telephone numbers for:

immigrant-serving organizations acrossCanada;

language training assessment centres(which help eligible adult newcomers find free language classes);

useful federal and provincial government offices.

There are hundreds of immigrant-serving organizations in Canada. Many are staffed by former newcomers to Canada, who understand the challenges that immigrants may face. They usually have people available who speak your language and can accompany you as interpreters. Citizenship and Immigration Canada supports many of these organizations financially, helping
newcomers adapt to life in Canada.

Settling in will be much easier if you contact an immigrant-serving organization as soon as
you arrive. The people who work for these organizations can help you find a place to live and can answer your questions about shopping, education for your children, transportation, language training and other important matters.

Immigrant-serving organizations can help you:

* find a place to live;
* get your Social Insurance Number andhealth-care card;
* enrol your children in school;
* get language training;
* find a family doctor;
* find out about government and community services for newcomers;
* look for a job;
* develop a realistic budget; and
* get emergency food aid, if it is needed.

Note:

In Quebec, the Ministère de l'Immigrationet des Communautés culturelles is organized into different regions. Each region has a local office, called a Carrefour d'intégration, which works with the immigrant-serving organizations to help newcomers adapt to life in Quebec.

Most immigrant-serving organizations offer, or can provide information on, the following
Government of Canada programs.

LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada)

LINC is a federal government program for all eligible adult immigrants.
It offers:

* free language training for adult newcomers who want or need basic English or French;
* language classes given by school boards, colleges and local organizations;
* the choice of studying part-time, full-time, evenings or weekends, depending on your
needs and your schedule; and
* transportation and child-minding, if necessary.

When you travel to Canada, you will need to have the following documents with you:

a Canadian immigrant visa and Confirmation of Permanent Residence for each family member travelling with you;

a valid passport or other travel document for each family member travelling with you;
two copies of a detailed list of all the personal or household items you are bringing with you; and

two copies of a list of items that are arriving later.

The lists should state how much your personal and household items are worth.

Make two copies of these lists - one for you to keep and one for the Canada
Customs officer. You can get the Canada Border Services Agency form for this purpose
from the Internet .

You must also bring with you enough money to cover living expenses such as
rent, food, clothing and transportation for a six-month period. You may be asked to
show proof of your funds. visit: http://settlement_in_canada.sitesled.com/chapter1.htm

Shake your Body!
Every day find new ways to move your body. Use the stairs rather than an escalator or elevator. Walk your dog (or a neighbours' dog if you don't have one!) , chase your kids, play ball with friends, mow the lawn. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it's a stress buster. Think 'move' in small increments of time. It doesn't have to be an hour in the gym or a 45-minute cardiovascular class or body pump or kickboxing. Move more and feel better!

Cut the Fat
Don't eat the obvious fat in your diet such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats. Eat dairy products like cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts and even then in their low fat verions. Most are available in lower fat versions.

Reduce Stress
Stress busters come in many forms. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e., go back to number one above!, exercise is a great stress reducer, Soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible.

Stop Smoking
All the experts agree on this one. Ever since 1960 when it was announced that smoking was harmful to your health, people have been reducing their use of tobacco products. Just recently, we've seen a surge in smoking in adolescents and teens. Warn your children of the false romance or 'tough guy' image of smokers. Find ways to quit smoking hypnosis, support groups and even prescription medicine such as Zyban is available to help you..

Reduce your exposure to Pollution
Not everyone can live in a smog-free environment, but we can all avoid smoke-filled rooms, high traffic areas, breathing in highway fumes and exercising near busy thoroughfares. Exercise outside when the smog rating is low. Exercise indoors in air conditioning where air quality is good. Plant lots of shrubbery in your yard. It's a good pollution deterrent. If you ride a bicycle in traffic, where a small pollution mask over your mouth and nose.

Clunk Click every Trip
Statistics show that the wearing of seat belts add to longevity and help alleviate potential injuries in car crashes.

Don't Drink too Much Alcohol
Whilst it is true that a glass of wine or one drink a day (two for men) can help protect against heart disease, more alcohol than that, or binge drinking on a night out, can cause other serious health problems such as liver and kidney disease and cancer.

Floss Your Teeth
Harvard Medical School studied longevity and found one of the most important contributing factors was daily flossing! Flossing and brushing your teeth daily can make your RealAge as much as 6.4 years younger. These studies make a direct connection between longevity and teeth flossing. Nobody knows exactly why. Perhaps it's because people who floss tend to be more health conscious than people who don't?

Maintain a Positive Mental Outlook
There's a definitive connection between living well and healthily and having a cheerful outlook on life. Yes, keep on smiling and laughing!

Pick Your Parents Well !
The link between genetics and health is a powerful one. You can't pick your parents, but just because one or both of your parents died young in ill health doesn't mean you can't counteract the genetic pool handed you. So follow the first 9 tips above. for more details visit: http://www.nikharearab.com/toptentips.html

Self-esteem is very important for your physical, psychological, and spiritual health. Enhancing your self-esteem is another passage to personal growth and change. Life begins to take on greater beauty as we open up and appreciate ourselves. As we value and love ourselves, we gain an acceptance of others. Self-esteem is something we can change and when we do, everything in our life changes. Self-esteem is simply the value we place on ourselves. If we link it to success, money, belongings and friends then we miss the mark. Out of true self-esteem, we create results. We become healthier, happier and make a more significant contribution in life. Self esteem is the opinion you have of yourself. It is based on your attitude to the following:Your value as a person The job you do Your achievements How you think others see you Your purpose in life Your place in the world Your potential for success Your strengths and weaknesses Your social status and how you relate to others Your independence or ability to stand on your own feet What is Low Self Esteem?Low self esteem results from you having a poor self image caused by your attitude to one or more of the above. Example: you do not value the job you do highly or you feel you have no purpose in your life. for more information visit: http://www.nikharearab.com/selfesteem.html

Avoid any sudden strain. If you are going to have to bend in any way make sure that your back is not cold and stiff. Exercise regularly to loosen up the back and strengthen its supporting abdominal muscles. Stretching your back helps loosen it and prevent injury.
If you sit for long periods, make sure your back is properly supported. Place a small roll in the arch of your lower spine (at waist height) to maintain its normal S-curve. Simply a towel, or cushion rolled up will do.
When lifting, never bend down from the waist, lower and raise yourself at the knees. Keep your back straight and hold the object close to your body. If you are going to carry anything any distance that may be heavy, make sure that your way is clear. You do not want to be dodging around things when you are carrying.
Balance items you carry evenly on both sides of your body and hold them close or use a knapsack.
Sleep on your back if possible, with knees raised on a pillow. If you sleep on your side, a pillow between the knees is a big help.
If you need a firm bed, place a board between the mattress and the box spring.

Lower Back Pain
Eight out of ten Americans will experience a backache at some point. Back pain is the second most common reason for doctor visits in the U.S. The causes of lower back pain are numerous. Some of the more common causes of lower back pain are:
Sudden injury to the back such as may occur in an auto accident, fall, sports, or other manner.
Gynecological conditions such as endometriosis, menstrual cramps, fibroid tumors, and pregnancy are sometimes the cause of lower back pain in women.
Stress to the muscles, nerves, or ligaments in the lower back.
Certain jobs such as those that require repetitive movements, sitting in chairs that are not ergonomically proper for your back, or standing for long periods of time often increase back stress and cause lower back pain.
Arthritis, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and other bone or joint diseases often cause lower back pain.
Not getting enough physical activity, being sedentary, or being overweight often stresses the lower back causing pain.
Slipped discs, pinched nerves, sciatica, aging, and infections are other common causes of lower back pain.
Smoking. More than 1300 physicians were followed from time of graduation (1948-1964) from John Hopkins University, some for over fifty years. The researchers found that smoking history, hypertension, and coronary artery disease (risk factors for atherosclerosis, occlusion of the arteries) are significantly associated with development of lower back pain.
Because there are so many causes of lower back pain, some serious such as spinal tumors, if you experience lower back pain see your health care provider for diagnosis. If your lower back pain is sudden and severe and it is not during your provider's office hours, go immediately to your local hospital emergency room.
Muscle Relaxants
Once the cause of your back pain has been been properly diagnosed, there are supplements to physical therapy and good posture that can help, such as skelatal muscle relaxants like Soma, Selaxin and Flexeril. Muscle relaxants such as Soma Selaxin and Flexeril are prescription medications that are used to treat pain caused by muscle spasms like muscle injuries, spasms, sprains, and strains. Skelaxin Soma Flexeril and other muscle relaxers are recommended as a supplement to physical therapy, rest, or other treatments your doctor may recommend, and will not replace these treatments. for more information visit: http://www.nikharearab.com/backacheprevention.html

Feel Good when you WantWhen you need to boost your self confidence or self esteem, find 3 things that make you feel good. These could be memories of good times, a piece of music, a holiday souvenir, or a person's face - use photos if it helps. Practise thinking about them and bringing them to mind. Developing self confidence that lasts - because of the way emotions 'attach' themselves to memories, you will quickly train yourself to feel good when you want - a great help.Beat Self ConsciousnessSelf consciousness is the No.1 enemy of self confidence. Learn how to keep your attention off yourself. You can do this easily by following these steps...If you notice you have become self-conscious, (you can usually tell because you start to feel anxious), choose something 'everyday' you can see and study it in detail. For example: examine a door, look at the different textures and shades of colour, wonder about who made it and how and so on. The important thing is that you're learning how to keep your attention off yourself.If you feel self-conscious in a social situation, it's usually because you don't have enough to do! Focus on what your purpose in the situation is. Whether you're there to: find out if you like the other people in the situation make others feel comfortable find out some information make business contacts and so on... It's easy to feel self-conscious if you have nothing to do, and much more difficult if your attention is occupied by a task.Think how comfortable you have been with others when you're all working toward a common goal. The common goal of socialising could be making friends, it could be the exchange of mutually beneficial information, it could be whatever you want it to be! for more information visit: http://www.nikharearab.com/selfesteem.html

Use your make up blusher cleverly to slim down chubby cheeks
Purchase two shades of blush, one of a deeper shade and one that's lighter. To ensure the shades go together, purchase a compact with two coordinating shades.
Apply your usual foundation make-up or powder to cover any imperfections and even out your skin tone.
Apply the lighter shade of blush in circular motions onto the apples of your cheeks... how do you to find your apples? Just smile!
Next, following the line of your cheekbones, apply a sheer sweep of the deeper shade of blush.
Blend, blend and blend. The key with this trick is to create dimension, but you do not want a very obvious demarcation between your natural cheek color and the blush (i.e. think stripes!).
Sweep a small amount of the lighter shade across your nose and/or forehead as desired to add an extra "glow" to your complexion. for other details visit: http://www.nikharearab.com/slimfacemakeup.html

Positivity rules
Try to stay open-minded and positive. Negative, rigid and inflexible attitudes decrease your ability to deal with the stresses of life and prevent you from enjoying yourself.

Get your zzz’s
Be sure to get an adequate amount of sleep each night. Fatigue can interfere with the information you have already stored and your ability to learn new things.

Beneficial B12
Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to serious and irreversible physiological and psychological problems. Get your intake from foods of animal origin like meat, fish, eggs and dairy products.

Stress-free solutions
To combat stress, go outside for a brisk walk instead of smoking a cigarette. Reach for your running shoes instead of the TV remote or a chocolate bar. Regular physical activity (at least 30 minutes a day for most days of the week) and a healthy, balanced, low-fat diet will not only make you feel better but help you to better manage your stress.

Morning energy
Need a boost in the mornings? Time your coffeemaker so that the aroma of coffee coincides with your alarm. Sing in the shower. Use lotions with stimulating scents such as mint. Plan at least one fun thing to do each day. Eat breakfast. Listen to a radio station that makes you laugh – laughter is one of the best energizers around!

I know we all have our stories to tell, and good reasons as to why we may be selling out of our much-loved feathered friends, but I feel we should put these 3 people at the top of our list when bird-hunting... that's if we care about making a difference.... also, they cover 3 of the main general areas in SE Qld...

Firstly, in South BRISBANE itself, there's Peter, on 3844 3611.

He is going to Germany soon to have stem-cell cancer treated, and has no one to care for his birds, so is wanting to sell as many as possible before he goes. He is also happy to 'loan' them to someone with lots of land and time on their hands, and just go 'halves' on the proceeds of the chicks...?
These birds include:
Indian Ringnecks - green through to pastels and lacewings (pairs and babies),
Moustache (one is Java) pairs and handraised male baby,
Green Cheek and Nanday Conures,
and others.

Secondly, North, there's Karen in BUNDABERG on 0419 191 423 or shekanary@hotmail.com

Karen acquired most of her feathered stock on the advice of her partner-at-the-time, who has since run out on her, leaving her with all the birds to care for on her own...
including...
Indian Ringnecks - (?50) colours from green to pastel grey, mature and last years, prices from $20 to $100;
Kakarikis - (14) 4 pair + 6 spare cocks, prefer to be sold in one lot $800;
Red Rumps(?40)various colours,
Bourke Parrots - (?70) normals, rosa, cream, pink,and ?as to what to call the others;
Galah pairs - (5);
Sulphur Crested Cockatoo pairs - (3);
Mallee ringneck - (1) cock bird;
Green Cheeked Conure - pairs(3 + spare hen)prefer to sell in one lot $600;
Cockatiels - (?30) pastel silver, whiteface and normals.

After all the birds are sold the aviaries are for sale. Sure, she's learning to love them for their own sake, but I wouldn't want that kind of reminder, would you?

Thirdly, South, there's Nic, in COOMINYA, on 5426 4335.

Due to her son's recent death, she is finding it very difficult to cope with the large collection of birds she has, including...

Indian Ringnecks
a recently-weaned handraised male Eclectus,
Alexandrines (pairs and handfed babies)
Sun Conures and Green Cheeked Conures (pairs and babies)
and Quakers

Both of these Southsiders have NO INTERNET ACCESS, so are truly struggling to advertise their beautiful birds effectively... I found both through the Weekend Shopper, listened to their tales of woe, and promised to do everything I could to help them out....

*UPDATE* Thanks to wonderful people like yourselves, Nic has almost sold all her excess stock, but Peter is still struggling, and he is due to leave for Germany VERY soon...PLEASE, if possible, try to make him top priority...?

Can ANYBODY ELSE out there do anything to help these people?

Anyone looking for LOTS of birds at once, PLEASE try these first... and tell them I referred you, so they don't think I've forgotten...

Warm Regards to All

Ideal for King Parrots or other large parrots that don't habitually chew wire (it's strong but not up to the beak of a Major Mitchell!). Also perfect for carers who may need to completely rearrange the internal setup of the enclosure on a semi-regular basis, as it has a very large barrel-bolted lockable side opening security door, as well a narrow strip of similar material along the bottom with a small barrel-bolt of it's own, which swings out and up, just sufficient to comfortably fit your hands, and large, flat-type dishes...(we also managed to net and remove all 20 ringnecks through that gap!)

Actual dimensions...
800mm from ground - add to this:
1500mm high, with 1m2 base dimensions

Made of very strong, sturdy materials - all metal, no wood.

$300 or trade/part-trade of equal value...?
(Still chasing partner for Malle/Cloncurry Australian Ringneck cross...(Pastel?)Skyblue/Lacewing, Lacewing/Pastelblue or Creamino IRNs, or Sunnies, if available)

For more information, pics, or to organise a viewing, please contact Sally-Anne Westendorf on 0433 762 448 (sms welcome), ringnecknuts@yahoo.com.au or s.westendorf@steelfinne.com.au

I also, often have ads for my birds, for Sale, Wanted, and (unfortunately) Lost.... to find these ads simply do a 'web' search on ringnecknut(s) or "Ctrl+F" search on "neckn" (minimum characters required) on any relevant page

For more background on me, personally, feel free to visit my website at http://tagged.com/ringnecknuts

Alternatively, if you are chasing a WALK-IN STYLE aviary, my friend George (in Oxley), DESPERATELY needs to find a home for his aviary (and proven breeding Ringneck pair), as he is shifting house NOW, and can NOT take the aviary with him....

It is in very good condition and has been sitting on a concrete slab for the past few years (no floor).

Large enough to walk in comfortably, it is therefore suitable for pets and breeders alike, and has housed 6 Indian Ringnecks comfortably for the past 2yrs.

The measurements are 240cm. wide [8ft] 160cm.wide[ 5 1/2ft] and 190cm.[6ft3"] high.

Remaining proven breeding pair of Indian Ringnecks are coming up to 4 years old in august, and are getting ready to settle in for breeding season now.

Price is $400 for the lot including two good-quality breeding boxes... paid $600 for the lot without the Boxes.

Blue proven breeding pair of IRNs also available (with their nestbox), but only as package deal with above ($500)

George's Home phone no. is 3278 4197 and mobile no. is 0413 763 903.

Also potentially available (depending on the deal...)
LARGE 3-BAY SUSPENDED aviary (advertised separately - pics available).
Dimensions:
Total - 2.7m across x 2.1m deep x 1.8m high;
Per Enclosure 0.9m wide x 0.9m high x 2.1m deep

And if none of these suit your requirements, I have many other contacts with aviaries to sell too...

Sorry about the length of the ad.... I get carried away... :O}

All poultry owners have had this problem at one time or another. The nest boxes get dirty and poopy and you have to collect soiled eggs! Find out how to build a simple nest box that will take only 5-10 minutes to construct, and will keep your eggs clean as a pin. Just send an email to cddennis@frontiernet.net

Help! We got our daughter a cockatiel her her birthday earlier in the month. He normally whistles all day long. The last couple of days, he has been almost silent. He is sleeping a lot as well. Also, his tail feathers.....
We noticed that there are two long grey pieces with no feathers. (However they do look to be growing very tiny feathers today) Please forgive my lack of knowledge. This is our first bird. We have done all of the research to ensure he is happy and healthy, but are now concerned about his health. It would break our hearts for anything to happen to him!

If anyone has any idea of what might be going on, please e-mail me at sunshinebanners@cox.net

I raise the question: 'What happens to an innocent man(person) condemned'? Drawing your attention to Australia's former Most Wanted and wrongly convicted woman Karen Tonkin who spent 18 years in prison as a result of a grave Miscarriage of Justice and a further 12.00 years on parole having been sentenced to Life/drug and thump therapy, psychological mental and emotional abuse and other deprivations of liberty including sexual assault, rapes and attempts on her life. The Criminal Justice System has been keen to conceal Tonkin's treatment and the initial miscarriage, with everything from court orders and securely archived materials that could be used for DNA and clear Tonkin of the crime for which she has suffered in silence, Further Tonkin has been silenced by the courts, the State, the Church and the media.
1950- Born in Western Victoria, Australia
1973- Wrongly convicted and sentenced to Life Imprisonment, Queensland, Australia.

I have recentlyacquired a 12month oldhand reared Rainbow Lorikeet that consumes it's daily quota of wet mix but just doesn't touch it's dry mix. He is also getting fruitand eating onlysomeof that.
Can anyone tell me if this is normal behaviour or should I be worried about how little he appears tobe eating.

I would greatly appreciate dietry advice and option.

I have recently visited a them park on the sunshine coast, When I arrived I was shocked to see a pair of Cockatoos in a Very small, dirty, FEREL, "aviary" no CAGE? The birds are starting to dig becasue they are obversly board, there is only one perch in the cage, the food bowls are only little china cups. I had some fruit on me which was my lunch i offerd the birds some grapes wich should be there daily diet but they dident know what it was. Im VERY up-set to see these lovely birds like this, I would kill to even have one of these birds, there my all time faveriot bird ever. Is just makes me so mad because other people are taking them for granted.

[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 16:41:05 11/13/02 Wed

I have a few questions to ask some people that already have experience in these matters. I only have one book at the moment and it's a good one but would like clarification in some areas.

1. Any ideas for sexing made easier? Apart from fuller body and wider gap in hip area or something like that.

2. Cage sizes for x amount of birds. I have 4 peachies and 2 masked.

3. Perch size diameter wise. I've got 12mm dowel in their temp holding cage but I think it's still a bit small.

4. Good all purpose diet regime. I've got info on fruit( apples), egg & biscuit mix, small parrot seed mix but is their anything else.

5. Nesting box size. I can't find anything clear here. I'll be making them myself.

Thanks to anyone who replies. I know I could find the info by searching the net and rerading more books but I like to hear from people who currently have lovies and know exactly what I'm asking. People who have tried something different and found that's worked. I usually work from scratch in regards to moi finches but with the lovies? I don't know where I have to start scratching......

Cheers
Craig Brisbane.

Hi everyone
Just looking for ideas on which birds to start breeding. I currently breed cockatiels (well they do most of the work!) and I have a few favourites when it comes to more breeding (ie conures, lorikeets) but not sure what type of bird would be a good option and not too expensive to sell the babies. I plan to hand raise.
If someone could give me a rough idea on types of birds to consider along with average prices that would be great.
Any contacts also would be appresciated.
Thanks

Hi everyone, I am looking for some advice, 5months ago I purchased a pair of "sun conures" the cockbird is proven and 4 yrs old, the hen is 3 yrs old, they have bonded and the hen has laid 3 clutches in 4 months but as yet we have not had any fertile eggs. The previouse owner said she had seen them mate many times but they hadn't bred as a pr for her,.
She was reducing her aviaries as she is getting very involved with horses and doesnt have the time to devote to both horses and birds.
These two birds are very bonded to each other, how long should I wait for fertile eggs??
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou Dawn.
